Universal Remote

With the Genie Universal Remote, you can control a combination of up to 4 different garage door openers and/or gate receivers. Each of the 4 buttons on the remote programs individually of the others so having multiple brands of openers controlled by a single remote is not a problem.

Each Genie Universal Remote comes standard with BOTH a visor clip or keychain option inside every box for maximum convenience.

The Genie Universal Remote uses a single CR2032 coin cell battery. You can access this battery by removing the Phillips head screw on the back of the remote with a screw driver and then use a small coin (if needed) to pop open the case.

Any of the Genie Universal Remotes can control the most popular brands of garage door openers and gate receivers such as Genie®, Overhead Door®, Chamberlain®, Linear®, Wayne Dalton®, plus many more! Overtime, we will implement additional manufacturers which means the compatibility list can and will change. Please check our website for the most up to date compatibility list.

For rolling code brands/specifications, no, the remote will not work on any other brands/specifications other than what is listed. For dip switch brands/specifications, it is possible if they are on the same MHz, however, without proper testing of individual units, this cannot be confirmed. Also please remember, Genie operator accessories should only be used on products produced 1993 and after that have functional safety sensors.

On the universal remote, press and hold down button #3 while pressing button #4 - four times. The blue LED will give a long blink and then go out. If the above does not work, clear the remote in the same manner you would clear original transmitters from the head. Please consult your opener manual for instruction. In most situations, clearing at the head will clear ALL RF devices (all transmitters/keypads). If you have only one opener, you may also simply program over of what has previously been done.

Leave the remote untouched for approximately 2 minutes or remove the battery and re-insert - then try the actions again.

The product has this feature if the software version etched on the back is v1.1.4 or higher. The Genie Universal Remote does not use physical dip switches, but it does use “virtual dip switches” – or dip switch codes created by using specific button presses on the remote. Once in the mode to receive dip switch input, the user will press 1=UP, 2=MIDDLE and 4=DOWN to represent the location of the dip switches on the original product.

(The software etched on the back must be v1.1.4 or greater) After preparing the remote to receive one of the named units, do not program it to the opener head. Instead, press the button on the universal remote that you have selected and prepared WITHOUT programming it to the head – this should operate the opener.

Try these steps first: 1. On remote, press and hold down button #2. 2. While still holding down button #2, press button #4 on remote four times.- then release both buttons (blue LED begins flashing) 3. Press the remote button of your choice four times and then simply WAIT until the blue LED stops blinking and goes out (@15 sec). 4. Press and hold down the remote button you just chose - after the white LED blinks (@5 sec) - release button. • 4A. ONLY IF you had to manually change your Yellow Learn Button opener to a 390MHz due to interference issues - simply press and hold the button in the step above for 10 seconds - after the white LEDs blink for the second time - all LEDs will go out completely - then release the button. If you did not have to manually change the opener to 390MHz, ignore this line 4a. 5. On the opener, press the LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2-3 seconds - then release. 6. On the remote, press the button you chose ONE time. Opener will click. 7. On the opener, press the LEARN/PROGRAM button again for 2-3 seconds - then release. TIP: Allow the LED light on the universal transmitter to stop flashing before your next button press. 8. On the remote, press the button you chose ONE time again. Opener will click again. 9. Test the button - programming is complete. TIP: Allow the LED light on the universal transmitter to stop flashing before your next button press. 10. Press the button and the opener should operate – programming is complete. If you have completed the above steps and were not successful, try the below: 1. On remote, press and hold down button #2. 2. While still holding down button #2, press button #4 on remote four times. 3. Press the remote button of your choice four times and then simply WAIT until the blue LED stops blinking and goes out (@15 sec). 4. Each of the 4 buttons on the Genie Universal Remote are pre-programmed with a popular opener manufacturer for your programming convenience. If you are not working with one of those brand openers or desire a different button setup than what is pre-programmed, no problem! You can easily change your button layout to your preference by following the regular programming instructions. If you do want to use the pre-programmed buttons: • Button 1: Genie Intellicode® I or Overhead Door CodeDodger® I • Button 2: Chamberlain® with a PURPLE LEARN Button • Button 3: Chamberlain® with an ORANGE/RED LEARN Button • Button 4: Chamberlain® with a YELLOW LEARN Button For all openers that are NOT Chamberlain YELLOW LEARN button: 1. On the garage door opener, press the LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2-3 seconds and then release. 2. On the universal remote, press and release the pre-set button that corresponds with your opener once every 2 seconds until the garage door opener operates. Programming is complete. TIP: Allow the LED light on the universal transmitter to stop flashing before your next button press For all Chamberlain openers with a YELLOW LEARN button: 1. Press and hold down button number 4 - after the white LED blinks (@5 sec) - release button. 1. 1a. ONLY IF you had to manually change your Yellow Learn Button opener to a 390MHz due to interference issues - simply press and hold the button in the step above for 10 seconds - after the white LEDs blink for the second time - all LEDs will go out completely - then release the button. On the universal remote, press and hold down button #3 while pressing button #4 - four times. The blue LED will give a long blink and then go out. 2. On opener, press LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2-3 seconds and then release. 3. On remote, press button #4 ONE time. The opener will run. Let it run until it stops. 1. TIP: Allow the LED light on the universal transmitter to stop flashing before your next button press. 4. On opener, press LEARN/PROGRAM button for 2-3 seconds again and then release. 5. On remote, press button #4 again ONE time. The opener will run. Let it run until it stops. 1. TIP: Allow the LED light on the universal transmitter to stop flashing before your next button press. 6. Press the button and the opener should operate – programming is complete.

If your remote has a software version of v1.1.8 or lower, you have access to a “Teach & Pair” function. The “Teach & Pair” (or “cloning”) feature is just another option offered to create an additional remote. To use the “Teach & Pair” (or “cloning”) feature for programming, an existing operational remote is required. The user can put the Genie Universal Remote into a ‘pairing mode’ – the user then presses a button on the existing working remote while the Genie Universal Remote “listens”. The Genie Universal Remote is then able to repeat back what it heard, “cloning” your existing remote transmission. Programming the remote to the opener head is still required to complete the process for rolling code products.

Be sure to vary the distance between the universal remote and the operational remote. Try touching them together, also try up to 4” apart. (Software versions can be found etched into the back of the remotes) For remotes with software versions marked v1.1.8 and lower: • If you have no other remotes or keypads that you are using or plan to use with the operator, the LEARN method will work and you will program to the head as the instructions indicate. • If you DO have additional remotes and/or keypads that you already use with the operator, you should use the TEACH & PAIR method only to alleviate the risk of interfering with products already programmed and working. For this scenario, you will not program the remote to the operator head.

Your remote must have a software version of v1.1.8 or lower.
